For musicians and composers, there are a lot of scams and attempts to get our money to help us get to the next level. Personally, I have found the most success in feedback and the ability to talk to others about what I am doing and what their opinion is for me to improve my piece.
Masterclass.com not only gives content but a forum and community for you to talk with. There are places to post songs, get insight into the mind of Hans Zimmer, and allows you as a composer to really think about some of your pieces in a different way.
After that introduction let's dive into the thing that is most important in my opinion: Content. Maybe for a composer who has been in the industry for twenty years, there are no new ideas, and personally, I don't know if I heard anything new. However, for me I was able to rethink projects I had in the pipeline, rethink some of my personal projects, and the way I would approach them. He made comments about how when he was scoring the Batman films, that he didn't want a full heroic theme. After re-listening and rewatching the films it connected me to the fact that I can connect to Batman as not a superhero in the sense of one with powers but with a guy just trying to do what he felt was right.
The second part of the content is the workbook. This is nothing like college classes or textbooks that I have had in the past. However, the workbook did make me do things out of my comfort zone and work out some new ideas in different types of projects.
Now the community is the second biggest reason that I liked this masterclass.com program is the community. They call it 'The Hub' and honestly the conversations and topics there have been anywhere from inspiring to helping me to improve or just good information about gear or production processes.
I would recommend this class at materclass.com wholeheartedly for anyone considering or in the early stages of their composing career. I have rewatched several of the videos and they really have been produced well for the ability to rewatch it over and over. The class is $90 for lifetime access and honestly, I am excited to see if they have any new classes coming out that I might be interested in.
